That matters because most MSPs are not going to win by trying to become experts in hyperscale compute. Instead, they are going to win by helping ordinary companies operate at a higher level inside an extraordinary moment.
What MSP owners should take away
The AI infrastructure opportunity is not limited to hyperscale data centers. For most regional MSPs, the more realistic opportunity is helping infrastructure-adjacent companies become secure, stable, and dependable enough to support larger projects.
- Contractors, utilities, logistics firms, engineering teams, municipalities, and field-service providers will need more mature IT operations.
- The practical MSP opportunity is security, uptime, identity control, endpoint management, documentation, recovery, and mobile workforce support.
- The strongest positioning is not we sell AI. It is we help the businesses around the AI buildout operate with less risk and more reliability.
The bigger opportunity is in the supporting ecosystem
The giant facility gets the attention. However, the surrounding companies carry a lot of the real work.
For example, every major infrastructure buildout depends on a wide network of businesses and organizations:
- electrical contractors
- civil and site-prep firms
- heavy equipment operators
- logistics and transportation companies
- engineering firms
- maintenance and field-service providers
- municipalities and local authorities
- utility-adjacent vendors
- physical security partners
- staffing and project coordination firms
Most of these are not AI companies in the way the market imagines. Instead, they are ordinary companies suddenly operating under much larger expectations.
They have to move faster. At the same time, they have to coordinate better, share information more securely, keep field teams working, and protect data and systems with less room for failure.
As a result, that is where MSPs come in.

A contractor doing normal regional work can sometimes limp along with weak documentation, inconsistent device policies, sloppy onboarding, poor backup discipline, or outdated networking.

Now the company may need:

- cleaner endpoint management
- better connectivity for mobile and field teams
- secure file sharing and coordination
- stronger backup and recovery posture
- better documentation and process discipline
- tighter vendor and subcontractor access controls
- more resilient networking

That is not a futuristic theory. That is what happens whenever larger projects place tighter demands on smaller or mid-market operators.
The MSP that understands this does not waste time chasing the server farm itself. It helps the surrounding firms become stable, secure, and reliable enough to perform in the world the buildout is creating.

In my view, this is where many MSPs are still aiming at the wrong target.
They assume they need an AI product strategy before they have an infrastructure-era client strategy.
But many MSPs are better positioned to help clients become operationally ready for the AI economy than they are to become AI specialists themselves.
That means helping clients:
- secure their workforce
- stabilize operations
- improve recovery readiness
- support distributed and mobile teams
- standardize identity and endpoint controls
- modernize communications and collaboration
- reduce downtime
- strengthen documentation
- prepare for partner scrutiny
- protect project data and business continuity
Put plainly, the opportunity may be less about selling AI and more about helping clients become dependable enough to participate in the world AI is helping build.
Infrastructure-adjacent companies are technology-dependent whether they say so or not
Meanwhile, a lot of the firms surrounding these projects still think of themselves primarily in physical terms.
They build, haul, inspect, coordinate, maintain, secure, and service. Even so, their ability to do that work now depends on technology more than many of them fully admit.
Field teams rely on connected devices. Schedules move through cloud platforms. Documentation lives in shared systems. Vendor coordination depends on digital communication. Access, reporting, logistics, and project execution all increasingly depend on systems that have to work.
Consequently, MSPs need to stop thinking in narrow office-IT categories.
If your client helps build, maintain, inspect, secure, move, coordinate, or support physical infrastructure, they are already in a technology-dependent business.
And if AI accelerates the buildout of infrastructure, that dependence only grows.
Security will matter more than many of these firms expect
In addition, the security implications here are serious.
A lot of supporting firms will not look like obvious high-value targets at first glance. However, they may still sit inside larger chains of trust that make them valuable to attackers.
That means MSPs serving these clients should be thinking hard about:
- identity security
- privileged access control
- phishing resistance
- endpoint visibility
- backup integrity
- remote access controls
- vendor access review
- incident response readiness
- business continuity for field operations
- documentation discipline
The wrong question is whether a contractor, logistics company, or regional service provider is important enough to be targeted.
The better question is whether it is connected enough to matter if compromised.
In these ecosystems, the answer is often yes.
This is also a positioning opportunity for MSPs

Talk about uptime, recovery, identity control, secure collaboration, mobile workforce support, and business continuity.
2. Learn infrastructure-adjacent workflows
Contractors, utilities, and field-service companies do not behave like generic office clients. Learn how their businesses actually function.
3. Improve support for distributed and mobile teams
A lot of this work happens in trucks, jobsites, plants, utility spaces, and temporary offices. That changes support expectations.
4. Lead with maturity, not fear
These clients do not need generic scare tactics. They need stronger systems, better controls, and cleaner operations.
5. Help clients become better partners
Sometimes the real value is helping a company become the kind of secure, reliable partner that larger infrastructure ecosystems want to trust.
Final thought for MSP leaders
Ultimately, the AI buildout is going to create more IT demand than many MSPs realize.
But that demand may not concentrate mainly inside the facilities getting all the attention.
It may show up in the surrounding ecosystem.
That includes the contractors, logistics firms, engineering groups, maintenance providers, regional utilities, municipalities, and vendors trying to keep larger systems moving.
